NO_CAP Modular Magnetic Protection
Traditional protective gear is often perceived as uncomfortable, bulky, and aesthetically unappealing. Because of this, many riders choose to compromise their safety for comfort and style. NO_CAP revolutionizes personal safety by introducing a high-performance protective system designed to be comfortable and visually seamless with any outfit. The breakthrough concept utilizes a two-part construction: an internal impact-absorbing core and an external shell that snap together through high-strength magnetic pairings. This makes the armor incredibly easy to apply, highly customizable, and open to endless shape and style combinations to match any garment.
01. PROBLEM ANALYSIS & RESEARCH
The Cost of Style over Safety
Data shows that over 54% of skateboarding injuries involve the extremities and joints, yet less than 25% of active riders regularly wear certified padding due to comfort issues and aesthetic stigma. In urban cycling and skating, minor fractures and soft-tissue abrasions account for the majority of emergency room visits. By analyzing the ergonomic and psychological barriers of action-sport athletes, it became clear that protection needs to be decentralized, modular, and non-invasive to be accepted.
02. DESIGN & FUNCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Reengineering Ergonomics
The goal was to design an impact system that is visually refined, adaptable to any clothing layer, ergonomic, and easily removable—offering a lighter, less obstructive alternative to traditional heavy padding. Through intensive 3D modeling, the geometries were optimized to follow body articulation flawlessly while hiding high-performance neodymium magnetic tracks inside the structure.
03. PROTOTYPING & ITERATIONS
From Cast Cores to Additive Manufacturing
Iteration 01
The first phase involved 3D printing custom rigid molds to cast an elastic polymer core, subsequently paired with a rigid printed external shell for a polished aesthetic finish. However, impact testing revealed that the hard external structure reduced kinetic absorption and posed secondary trauma risks upon fracturing.
Iteration 02
To optimize weight and shock diffusion, the second phase bypassed casting by shifting to direct additive manufacturing using Expanded TPU. This iteration focused on fine-tuning shell thickness, infill density (gyroid patterns), and wall parameters to achieve the perfect balance between structural elasticity and high-speed energy dissipation.
04. FINAL PRODUCT & FIELD TESTING
The New Standard of Action Wear
The final NO_CAP system delivers uncompromised safety hidden in plain sight. Light, modular, and ultra-resistant, the protectors react instantly to impacts while remaining completely flexible during movement. Tested on the streets, the magnetic locking mechanism ensures zero displacement during high-velocity maneuvers and falls.
